Trani Ammouda
This beach stretches a little further out of Agios Nikolaos, before the Bay of Panagia and Vourvourou. It is in a small bay and in its northern part dominates a small cape on which the remains of a Byzantine tower stand out.
Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Halkidiki is located between Toroneos and Siggitiko Gulf while reaching Cape Drepanos.
Its history, according to historians, dates back to prehistoric times. Fossils of elephant-like prehistoric creatures and other extinct species have been found in Nikiti, Triglia, etc. proving the significant evolutionary changes which happened there during the prehistoric times. Samples of organized society are found in Halkidiki from 4,000 BC. Its oldest inhabitants were Thracians and Pelasgians. Sithones, according to historians, were a tribe of Phrygian origin and settled around the 8th century BC.
In addition, archaeological findings show that during the classical and Roman period, there were settlements in the area of today’s Elia, Agios Georgios, Kastri and Lagomandra.
According to mythology, Sithonia was named in honor of Sithon, king of the Thracian tribe of Odomantes, son of the god Poseidon and Ossa.
Its famous cities in ancient times were Sermili, Fyskella, Parthenopolis, Toroni, Ampelos, Sarti, Piloros, Assa and Sithoni.
